Someone made a comment to me on the tennis court the other day that really got me thinking. They were a much more talented player than I and he was beating me to a pulp when I piped up in my usual manner and said something to the effect of, “Here I come, watch out now, here comes my “A” game, I have you right here where I want you”, I hear the theme from Rocky coming on, etc…
No big deal…. just trash talk right? The funny thing is that I actually Believed I could pull out a win if I just kept focusing on enjoying the game and played my best.
However, It’s how my opponent responded that really got me thinking and gave me the topic for this articles, He said:
“You know, it’s great that you have such a positive attitude and everything, but that’s not what’s going to win you games”
“Wow, what a statement.” I thought to myself and rushed right home after the match (which yes, I ended up pulling off a victory) to write this thought down.
“A positive Attitude will not get the desired results every time, however, a negative one surely will.”
You see, of every successful individual that I know, past or present, there is only ONE true common variable that I could think of. They all had an overly zealous positive attitude and actually believed that they ultimately would succeed.
Think of all the great American Icons that shared the same characteristics as well.
Imagine such people as Henry Ford, The Wright Brothers, Thomas Edison, Bill Gates or Abraham Lincoln saying something like, “Awe, this is too hard, I’m way out of my league here, let’s just forget about it.”
Of course not! They kept pushing on through all their adversities and setbacks, believing they would eventually succeed as long as they kept believing in the beauty of their dream. It reminds me of the old saying that my coach used to tell me “Quitters never win, and winners never quit”
So, now I put this same scenario to you…
“What would you do right now, at this moment, if you believed that you couldn’t fail?”
Ask for a promotion? Or ask that person out on a date that you’ve had a crush on? What about taking ACTION toward that crazy Idea or invention that you’ve simply been putting off until the right time? Write a Book? Adopt a child? Start your own business? Challenge a better player in Tennis? What?
Think about it, we all have these wonderful things running through our mind from time to time, we get all hyped up on the idea and then what happens? We let the (Stinkin’ Thinkin’) set in and talk ourselves into believing that it’s never going to work, that the challenge is too great, or that the special someone won’t like you because of the car you drive, what if they say no?
You’ll look like a fool, what if my idea doesn’t work or no one reads my book?, etc…or in other words, we give ourselves “reasons” To fail…or even worse, reasons to never take a chance and put your dreams into action in the first place.
Here’s a BIG newsflash: Assuming these examples are our wishes, and not realities; You already don’t have the promotion, nor the new love, the book, or the idea into motion at this point anyway, so what do you have to lose?
However, by taking the first step of believing in yourself, your dreams, and desires, while maintaining a Positive attitude toward the outcome, you can only move in one direction. Forward.
It reminds me of this guy I was hanging out at the mall with a week back or so, who saw this beautiful woman and said how much he’d love to go out with her. So I suggested that he go over to her and ask her out on a date.
In which he replied, “what if she says no?” to where I said in return…”She’s already NOT going out with you there big fella, so you have nothing to lose here, and in reality, you can only gain a date, so no matter what, you can’t fail, the worse thing that can happen is that you don’t go out with her and like I said, you’re already doing that…right?”
“Right” he responded with a look of confusion on his face like someone had just ran off the entire dialogue of Abbott and Costello’s “Who’s on first” and went over and made a new friend. (smile)
You too have the opportunity (right NOW) to have what you desire as well, simply by adjusting your attitude toward the outcome, because…
“A Positive attitude will not get the desired results every time, however, a negative one surely will.”
